Mothers' Day
Have you ever wondered where Mothers’
Day originated? Wow! Well am here to share with you. In 1908, one Miss Anna Jarvis made the second of every second Sunday made public her plans to establish to honor mothers. This was on the second anniversary for her mother. The observance became official in 1914 after the then president of USA, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law, making the second Sunday in May the Mothers’ Day. And since then Mothers’ Day is an international holiday, celebrated in over 100 countries.
Similarly, in the ancient Greeks and Romans there was a day set aside to celebrate the god of mother that was responsible for fertility.
A Mother is defined as the person in whom life receives a form suitable for living in this world. ‘Living in this world’ means that a person is alive and functioning physically and spiritually. It means that a person hungers for physical food, spiritual nourishment - loving others and being loved by them, establishing intimate, committed and growing relationships, appreciating culture and nature, and most of all – loving and worshipping the Creator. All these begin to take shape and grow in the person of the mother.
Women are the ideal for the innate ability to care, love and sacrifice. She plays persistent roles of a mother, daughter, wife, sister, friend, guide and teacher. She is the most patient as well as the most courageous, beautiful person in your life and no wonder God gave her the ability to be a mother.
Human beings are first changed from a biological being to a social being by the mother. Socialization begins right from conception as claimed by socialists. Children learn to regulate emotional arousal during early childhood through the interactions with the parents especially the mother during breastfeeding, diaper changing, feeding. We still remain to be children according to our mothers even when we are grown up. A mother forges a bond with the offspring that many cannot understand. Though a child leaves his/her mother when he/she grows up, however the bond forged is a mysterious one, never to be broke. There is nothing as pure or powerful as mother's love. A good mother-child relationship builds communication between the two hence a strong bond. Children who have not had secure attachment relationships tend to suffer from depression, show anti-social behavior and are generally more emotionally and behaviorally troubled. Without the relevant support, such as counseling, encouragement and subsequent relationships which are healthy and loving, this most often will result in problems with adult relationships. Consequently, losing a mother is very painful.
Mother's Day is set aside to acknowledge, show appreciation for and honor your "mom" (and other moms in your life).today is not a Sunday like any other, go ahead to treat your mothers (buy her gifts, take her out), share experiences, look into her eyes and whisper “ Mamie, I love you, I treasure you dearly.’ Surprise your mother with gifts and make her feel great and powerful.
